Equine Art: C. Tanner Jensen

I have admired C. Tanner Jensen's paintings and mixed media pieces for several years now. I discovered her work originally while doing research for one of my college classes. I do not remember which project I was working on at the time, but somehow it led me to her "In Search of the Superlative Horse" series. These sophisticated mixed media works remind me of Davinci's sketches. They bear resemblance to renaissance era scientific or anatomical studies, yet the delicate mark making and airy composition add a spiritual quality.

NewImage
Mixed Media on Paper

Most recently, I have been impressed by Jensen's "Iberian" oil paintings.

IberianI blue horse right

IberianII red horse left

As a small child, my love for horses led to thousands of hours at the kitchen table drawing and coloring my future mounts. As an adult, I now explore my relationship and fascination with horses in my painting. My hope is that through these images, the viewer will see horses anew! From a vantage point that not only encompasses the earthly elements of the horse, but also the spiritual and metaphorical aspects. - C. Tanner Jensen

To view the rest of Jensen's intricate and elegant artwork, visit her website C. Tanner Jensen Fine Art. She has gorgeous giclee prints (below) available of three mixed media pieces from her "In Search of the Superlative Horse in her Giclee Print Gallery! Also, you can keep up to date on Jensen's latest works and available prints by following her blog ctannerjensen.blogspot.com.

Vote for My OTTB Kidd and I!

Alright, shameless plug time. I entered a photo of my Thoroughbred Kidd and I (my "About" photo on the right -->) in One Stop Equine Shop's photo contest. It is ending in just a few days, and I am currently in second place. Of course, I would really love to win the gift certificate to One Stop Equine Shop and spoil Kidd (more than he already is :D )!

The photo I entered in the contest.

So, if you could please take a moment and follow this link: https://apps.napkinlabs.com/facebook/meta/type/topic/id/bb91368aa3924782826bae7fad10a3e8 to vote for Kidd and I, I would greatly appreciate it. Be sure to click the "Like" icon under the photo and not the one at the top of the photo. The one at the top "likes" the company.

Thank you all in advance!

Equine Photography: javidelucar on Flickr

Besides searching through Etsy for artwork and photography to feature on the blog, my second two greatest sources of blog inspiration are Pinterest and Tumblr. I am still working to grow the number of "Pinners" and Tumblr blogs I follow, but already I have found gems via both of these social sites. I found the photographer I am featuring today on a Tumblr blog I follow!

Javidelucar1

El Semental, javidelucar

Flickr pro member javidelucar shot a gorgeous series of photos of Baroque horses. Javier's compositions are bold and unique. The high contrast between the oftentimes dark backgrounds and light grey coats of his subjects emphasizes the movement and emotion of his subjects. These photos are very "in the moment", capturing something that happens in a fraction of a second; not constructed or posed.

Wonderful captures aren't they? There are three whole pages of these gorgeous photos in Javier's Flickr set "Caballos". I recommend taking a look at the rest of them!

Irish Hunter Equestrian T-Shirts: An Interview with Founder Kate Harvey

Irish Hunter is a hot new equestrian brand that has quickly caught the attention of many horse publications and fashionable horse lovers. Irish Hunter currently offers high quality t-shirts with bold equestrian themed designs that can transition easily from barn wear to a night out.

NewImage

"Riding is a Grand Passion!"

I interviewed founder, Kate Harvey, to gain some insight into her inspiration and goals for this wonderful new company:

Founder Kate Harvey exhibiting Irish Hunter at the Western States Horse Expo.

What inspired you to create your own clothing line?

"Ever since I can remember (like before 4 years of age) I have LOVED horses and everything about them and despite not coming from an equestrian family I still managed to start riding at the age of 5. As a youngster horses were my first love and true passion and I was lucky enough to have had opportunities to spend countless hours riding, caring for, eventually training and even showing horses.

As I got older and in to high school I had decided that someday I wanted to be an entrepreneur but at that time I had no clue as to how to begin, no successful mentors in my life to help guide me, nor the confidence to take the first step. So, I decided to change all that and start a path towards success. I went to college and studied Animal Science at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and after graduation began working to gain business experience.

Eventually I got a job with Cargill, a multinational Ag Corporation who is also the largest privately held corporation in the US. While there I worked hard to learn everything I could about managing a successful business. It was challenging but very rewarding for I had finally gained the knowledge and skills I needed to be confident enough to start a business. I thought long and hard and wanted to do something within the equestrian industry. Like all women I love clothes and I had noticed that there wasn't much in the way of chic, casual equestrian clothing so the idea of Irish Hunter T-shirt Co. was born. I combined my love of horses with a love for fashion in to one cute little start up to bring casual clothing that was actually stylish, feminine and flattering to the equestrian market."

NewImage
The Monarch
"His neigh is like the Bidding of a Monarch and his Countenance enforces Homage."

When did you start your business and what made you choose t-shirts as your first product line?

"Irish Hunter officially opened for business on April 18, 2012. I chose T-shirt for several reasons. First, I love tees for their versatility in colors, cuts and ability to display eye catching and artistic graphics which can be so much more fun than a plain shirt or blouse, plus they are a comfortable break from a stiff office wardrobe. Growing up on the unique CA Central Coast I was influenced by the mix of surfer and cowboy cultures (I actually used to surf with a horse shoer in Pismo Beach). The coastal California lifestyle is well known for being relaxed and as fabrics have improved, the tee has become a lot more grown up and stylish in terms of casual sophistication. And lastly and very importantly because I am unfortunately not a member of the Onassis family, tees were an affordable entry in to the fashion business for a small start up company with big city dreams."

What new items can we expect to see from you in the coming seasons?

"I plan to expand the offerings to include tank tops for spring/summer, hoodies for fall/winter and polo shirts for the hunter/jumper crowd, all featuring beautiful color combinations and artistic equine graphics. While the current designs appeal primarily to the English set, I would also like to put out a line that appeals to the Western lifestyle enthusiast. I have a great interest in the American Wild West and its cowboy culture that I know will inspire some great designs. This will all be coming out in 2013."

"Time in the saddle is never wasted."

Where do you see your company in five years? What are some of your long-term goals?

"Now we're getting in to the serious stuff! In five years I see my company being a well known and respected equestrian clothing company with a presence in both the US, the UK and Europe. My long term goals are all a means to the same end.

1. I started from day one supporting the Compton Jr. Posse with funds generated from the sales of merchandise. I plan to continue that support because the organization strongly emphasizes education and I am a firm believer in the importance of educating our youth for a brighter future of our society. I also love that it includes horses in doing so, inspiring future equestrians.

2. Within the next 2 years I would like Irish Hunter's fashions to gain popularity in mainstream fashion. For example, being featured in Glamour or Lucky magazines. Elite designers such as Gucci, Hermes and Ralph Lauren have made equestrian fashion a perennial staple in the fashion world. I would like for Irish Hunter to be a casual equestrian fashion line that appeals to consumers outside of the equestrian industry. To some this may sound crazy, but hear me out. The majority of women and girls find horses to be appealing. Even if they don't ride, they might want to, or can at least appreciate horses in art, plus riding is one of the most aesthetically pleasing sports one can participate in. I think there's something very appealing about the equestrian lifestyle, and fashion is a main identifier of a lifestyle, even if one is not actively participating in it. Take for example surf shops. They are found everywhere, including Omaha, Nebraska (cattle and corn country) and their biggest selling items are clothing. This is because even if you don't live by the beach, even if you've never surfed, even if you've never made the effort to be a spectator at the US Open of Surfing, the relaxed beach lifestyle is still very appealing. The great thing about horses is that you can enjoy them almost anywhere, you don't even need a beach. I want to make women's casual equestrian apparel just as appealing on a broad scale.

3. Finally, once I have achieved this level of success, I'd like to sell the company to a larger entity such as Ariat, Inc. and retire to a life of horseback riding, travel and adventure while enjoying more free time with family and friends."

All three of the t-shirts pictured are currently available on Irish Hunter's website: www.ihequestrianapparel.com. Which of the three designs is your favorite? Mine is The Monarch!

Friday Round-Up: Fall Boots I am Loving So Far

Although I am sad that summer is quickly coming to an end, a little part of me can't wait for it to be cool enough to slip into my knee high riding style boots!

Last September I bought Sam Edelman's popular "Pierce" boots. I practically lived in those boots until mid-spring. I so wanted to be able to include them in this round-up, but unfortunately I haven't seen them released anywhere yet. I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will come back this fall! If they do, I will have to have a second boot round-up (hence the "so far" at the end of the title).

ZSE160 OUT
Sam Edelman Fall '11 Pierce Boot

Aren't they gorgeous?  I have received so many compliments while wearing these boots.
Now, on to some boots that actually are available currently!  Here are a few different riding style boots that have caught my eye recently:

Fryepaigezappos

Fryemelissazappos

Fryejennastudzappos
These boots have a bit of a biker edge with the added stud detailing which is very on trend this fall.

Lazare black 2
Duo Lazare in Black available at Duo

Quick note about Duo boots:  These boots come in 10 different calf sizes!  I bought a pair of Duo boots at their Bath, England store a few years ago.  They are excellent quality and fit like they were custom made.  I have small calves and have a very hard time finding knee high boots that don't make me look like I am playing dress up.  Although the company is based in the UK, they offer free shipping to the US!

There are a handful of other boots that have also caught my eye, but I will save those for now, and feature them after some more fall boots (Sam Edelman Pierce please!) are released closer to fall.

Do you have a favorite boot brand or a particular style that you would like to recommend?  Tell me about them in the comments!

Etsy Equestrian Chic Vol. 3

This week's collection is all about gorgeous equestrian inspired jewelry. There is a LOT of beautiful jewelry on Etsy, so narrowing my favorites down to just five was a challenge. I was truly wowed by the following pieces.
Etsyeqchicaug22
1. Silver Horseshoe Ring by thebeadgirl
2. Saddler Horse Necklace by SilkPurseSowsEar
3. .925 Sterling Silver Snaffle Bit Horse Ring by NongBuaDang
4. Horseback Rider and Clouds Silhouette Necklace by MotherWasRight
Isn't #4 unique? I have never seen a piece like it. The composition created by the two elements is striking.
5. Luck Necklace by BeauAndStella
Which one would you love to be wearing right now?

Pony on Blue Letterpress Card by Ferdinand

While browsing through an local art shop recently, I found this cute handmade letterpress card.

Photo

The fact that it will go perfectly with my "Horse With Bubblegum" mixed media piece by Coco de Paris gave me all the reason I needed to buy it. Although, at $4.00, did I really need to justify buying something this cute? Probably not!

The best part is that these cards are also available through Etsy! The name of the shop is ferdinandhome, and the card is listed for sale here.

How I Clean My Tack

I spent Sunday afternoon cleaning and conditioning my saddles and bridles. I really enjoy cleaning tack, so it made for a nice relaxing afternoon! While I was at it, I decided to take some photos and create a how-to post.

Everyone has a preferred method when it comes to caring for their leather tack. This is how I keep my tack in great shape.

My preferred supplies:

Leathercleaningsupplies
From Left to Right:
1. Carr & Day & Martin Belvoir Leather Balsam, available here
2. Leather Therapy Wash, available here
3. Effax Leder-Combi, available here

A quick note: Although I included Effax's Leder-Combi in my recommended supplies, I did not actually use it in my how-to because the saddle needed a deep clean and polish. However, Leder-Combi is a great maintenance cleaner/conditioner combo to keep right in your brush box! After I ride (especially on hot days) I squirt a little on a cloth and wipe down my girth and bridle. It takes all of the sweat and dirt right off, and prolongs the length of time I can go between deep cleaning my tack. It has been recommended over and over again on The Chronicle of the Horse forums for this reason!

4. Nevr-Dull Magic Wadding Polish, available here
Bottom:
5. Carr & Day & Martin Belvoir Tack Conditioner Soap Bar (Glycerine), available here

Can you tell that I have a favorite local tack shop?

Leathercleaningtools
The tools:
Toothbrush
Tack Cleaning Sponges
Plenty of clean rags

The subject:

Saddlebeforecleaning

Meet my well loved all-purpose Crosby Sofride. This saddle has sat unused for the last two years, and is in desperate need of a good cleaning and conditioning. This is the "Before" photo.

Step 1: Clean

The first thing I always do before I begin cleaning my tack is wipe down everything with a rag to remove any dry dust and dirt. I then fill a bucket with a little bit of warm water to dampen my sponge with.

Leathercleaningspray
1. Spray a little cleaner on the damp (not dripping wet!) sponge and work it into the leather. I used my Leather Therapy Wash on Sunday, but I also have a bottle of Belvoir Tack Cleaner Spray that works just as well.

2. As you scrub with your sponge, work in small sections. Stop every few minutes to wipe the area you just cleaned dry with a cloth. I have found that this step helps to further wipe away dirt and prevents the leather from becoming too wet.

3. Use a toothbrush to really scrub the seams, the stitching, and any stubborn dirt and grime. You can spray your cleaner directly onto the toothbrush.

Step 2: Polish

Before I condition, I polish all of the metal hardware on the saddle.

Polishhardware
1. Pull off a small section of the Nevr-Dull wadding polish. A little goes a long way!

2. Scrub all of the hardware; going over the same spot several times.

3. The Nevr-Dull polish does leave a residue. Just wipe any residue away with the cleaning sponge.

4. I then go over all of the hardware with a rag to make sure that there is no residue left.

5. Wiping with a rag really is the key to achieving a high shine!

Step 3: Condition

I recently wrote about how much I love Carr & Day & Martin's Belvoir leather care line in the following post: New Favorite Leather Care Product: Belvoir Leather Balsam; Intensive Conditioner. This conditioner, like many balsams, is a deep conditioning treatment meant for tack that could use a little extra TLC. After sitting for two years, my saddle needed the extra moisture a balsam provides!

If you are cleaning and conditioning your tack on a regular basis, you will not need to use a balsam conditioner every time. Instead, I would recommend using a bar of glycerine soap (number 5 on my supplies list) for regular conditioning. Apply it to clean tack sparingly with a rag to avoid leaving a residue, and it will make the leather shine.

Leatherbalsam
1. Belvoir's balsam comes with a sponge. Unfortunately the sponge in my can melted into the balsam on a hot day, so I have to use an extra sponge.

2. I apply the balsam to the leather just like I apply the cleaner.

3. In order for the balsam to penetrate deeply into the leather, it is recommended that you apply it and then let it sit on the leather for at least half and hour.

4. The last step is to wipe the entire saddle down with a clean rag to remove any extra conditioner.

And viola! My saddle looks SO much better now than it did before!

Cleanedsaddle Saddlebeforeafter

I also wanted to share this excellent article I found on The Chronicle of the Horse: "Beyond Saddle Soap--Cleaning Non-Leather Equipment by Lindsay Berreth". This article has some great advice on how to clean wool, suede, stirrups, bits, etc! Super helpful!

Do you have any tack cleaning tips and tricks? Please share them in the comments!

Blog News & Some Anthropologie Eye Candy!

Today I accomplished quite a bit on my blog. All of the work I did today, which I will point out in a moment, was spurred by research I have been doing over the past week.

Yesterday I signed up with a few different affiliate marketing programs to use with my blog. Until now, I have not used any sort of advertising on my blog. Yet, as my blog continues to grow, and as I increase my dedication, I feel that including non-intrusive advertising is the next logical step in my blogging career. Thats right CAREER :)! My goal is to eventually become a full time blogger!

In the near future, I will begin using affiliate links from time to time. However, you can rest assured that I will never let the fact that I am an affiliate for a certain company dictate the content that I post on this blog.

This all leads me back to the work I did today. If you look at the "Menu" you will notice that I have added two pages; a "Disclaimer" and an "Advertise" page. At the bottom of my page I have added a second navigation bar. On that bar, you will notice that I have added a "Disclosure & Privacy Policy" page. If you would like to learn more about the advertising I intend to include on this blog, or how the affiliate links work, I recommend taking a peek at those new pages.

Writing all of these new pages took quite a bit of time and research! Now that they are completed, the only additional writing I wanted to do was to update all of you wonderful readers and inform you of my goals. But, of course a blog post isn't complete without some pretty pictures right?

Enjoy!

Equine Photography: Shelli Breidenbach

This week I am swapping out my traditional "Friday Round-Up" to feature Shelli Breidenbach's life-sized photography. When the stunning photo below was featured on The Horse Rider's Journal's Facebook page earlier in the week, I immediately emailed her, asking permission to share her lovely work with my readers.

Her statuesque and commanding equestrian images reflect the aesthetic beauty, grace and strength that each horse possesses (source).

Breidenbach's compositions feature horses in front of white, black, and even vibrantly colored canvas. By placing her subject in front of a simple background, she is encouraging the viewer to further study the intricacy of the equine form and its innate beauty.

Etsy Equestrian Chic Vol. 2

This week for my "Etsy Equestrian Chic" collection, I thought it would be fun to feature some items that would add an equestrian flair to your office, home, and correspondence. Customized gift tags add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any gift you give, while a journal made from a vintage book provides a stylish way to take notes at a meeting or in class!

Piperlime's Electric Equestrian Outfit Inspiration

A few days ago, I received Piperlime's "Crash Course in Color" email showing how to pair two vibrant colors in one outfit. It so happened that one of the featured outfits had an equestrian flair. I love the colors Piperlime put together--chartreuse and cool blue--and of course I loved the ensemble. I had to share it with all of you!

Screen shot 2012 08 12 at 11 15 03 AM

To get the look:

Blazer: Pim + Larkin in Gold Lurex
Blouse: Equipment Brett Silk Blouse in Lime Punch
Skinny Jeans: Paige Denim Autumn Colors Skyline Skinny Jeans in Swirl
Pumps: Ivanka Trump Pinkish in Light Beige Patent
Handbag: Z Spoke Zac Posen Eartha Hinged Top Handle in Khaki and Olive

I love how the beige tones in the blazer and accessories tone down the brightly hued blouse and jeans, making the outfit attention-getting but not too loud to wear to work. You could also easily style this outfit with a pair of knee high boots instead of pumps for those chilly fall days.

What is your favorite item (clothing or accessory) in the outfit inspiration photo?

Equine Art: Lydia Kiernan

U.K. based artist Lydia Kiernan's equine drawings capture the movement and energy of the horse in a clean linear style. Her knowledge of the anatomy of the horse is evident through her oftentimes deconstructed and raw representations of the animal. It is this knowledge that allows Kiernan to capture the gesture of the horse in a convincing and flowing manner.

Kiernan's drawings contain a variety of lines, marks, and textures. She makes the media work for her, creating a sense of weight through a thicker line and movement with a collection of light flitting marks.

The greatest compliment to Lydia's work is the approval that it has received from those who work closely with horses in their day-to-day lives...(source)
